Preparing the blood supply is our number one priority this winter

The anticipation of snow leaves Bloodworks with one thought: are we prepared to meet local blood needs? Winter storms can quickly deplete our blood supply. Through any weather, patients in our community depend on transfusions to survive cancer, traumas, and bleeding disorders.

You can help our community be ready for whatever the weather brings by making an appointment today to donate blood at the IMAN Center on Thursday, December 26.

Milaad-An-Nabi Food distribution in Dasht-e Barchi, Kabul, Afghanistan

Earlier in October, IMAN responded to a request from Lady Fatemah Trust (LFT) to provide funding ($26,238.49 - twenty-six thousand two hundred thirty-eight dollars and forty-nine cents) to assist food-insecure families, particularly those who are headed by women who cannot afford nutritionally balanced food for their children and live in the famine.

The project which is initiated for Milaad-An-Nabi special occasion aims to distribute an essential package of food which includes 5 liters of cooking oil, 7 kg of beans, 7 kg of peas, 24 kg of rice, 2 kg of milk powder, and 6 boxes of fresh dates, with each box weighing 1 kg. The LFT team will distribute this aid among the most insecure families, particularly orphaned children and women-headed households.

The basket contents have been reviewed by a nutritional consultant and the families will have awareness raised on healthier lifestyle choices, access to income generation through MOM programs, schooling for children and mental health wellbeing.

Supporting the White Center Food Bank

A donation of $10,000 has been made on behalf of the IMAN community to support the impactful work of the White Center Food Bank.

IMAN Center representatives visited the White Center Food Bank on November 4th, 2024 to support the efforts of the food bank as they prepare to serve at least 2,200 families for the holiday.

Here are some of the White Center Food Bank initiatives:

  • Mobile Food Banks: Recognizing the challenges of access for those with mobility issues, the White Center Food Bank operates mobile food banks at three low-income senior housing facilities. Through this initiative, they deliver food to nearly 200 households twice a month.

  • Satellite Pantries: To reach families who may find it difficult to visit the food bank during the week, White Center Food Bank has established partnerships with local schools and medical facilities, creating convenient food pantry access points where community members frequently visit. Key partnerships include:

    • New Start High School, South Seattle College, and White Center Heights Elementary: These schools host onsite pantries stocked with food for students and families in need. Volunteers from each school help maintain these pantries, ensuring accessibility to those who need it.

    • Sea Mar Medical Clinics:  Four local Sea Mar clinics provide healthy food options for patients identified as food-insecure. Clinicians refer patients to pick up nutritious items from the pantry, which supplements general food insecurity screenings and additional referrals to the food bank if needed.

  • Home Delivery: For community members unable to reach the food bank or pantries, White Center Food Bank offers home deliveries twice a week, delivering over 5,000 pounds of food to approximately 200 households monthly. This service is made possible through two main partnerships:

    • Bicycle Delivery. Established during the COVID-19 pandemic, this program enlists volunteers from the Cascade Bicycle Club’s Pedaling Relief Project to deliver groceries by bike each Thursday, rain or shine.

    • United Way - Door Dash Partnership.  Initiated during the pandemic, this collaboration with United Way of King County and DoorDash enables food deliveries by DoorDash drivers every Monday. United Way connects clients in need, while the food bank provides the food and volunteer support to pack it.

  • Baby Pantry: In addition to food, White Center Food Bank offers essential childcare supplies, including diapers and formula, through its Baby Pantry. In partnership with Westside Baby, the pantry provides monthly assistance to families, with items such as clothing, car seats, and other essentials available for pickup. This program, led by Baby Pantry Coordinator Gabby, is entirely donation-driven and supported by Westside Baby. Each month, about 216 families benefit from these resources, and the food bank’s new facility includes dedicated storage for this program.

  • Community Partnerships: Since 2016, the food bank has partnered with White Center Community Development Association and three family-owned local markets—Samway Market, Lee’s Market, and Hung Long Asian Market. Monthly $5 gift certificates allow customers to purchase fresh, culturally relevant produce that may not always be available at the food bank. This initiative strengthens community ties and supports local businesses in White Center.
