The Middle Cushion Anchored in Purpose and Values
In this week's Friday khutbah, "The Middle Cushion," we reflect on Imām ʿAlī's (ʿa) words,
"We are the middle cushion — the one who lags behind catches up to it, and the one who has gone to excess returns to it" (Nahj al-Balāghah, Saying 109).
Drawing on Imām al-Bāqir's (ʿa) call to "be the middle cushion" and his warning not to confuse identity with transformation, the first khutbah asks who we are becoming and whether our faith is visible in how we live.
The second khutbah asks how purpose and values become culture, people and institutions that keep serving after we are gone. It draws on the Prophet's ﷺ example in Madinah, the Qur'an's image of the good tree, and Imām al-Ṣādiq's (ʿa) teaching on the three things that follow a person after death, with insights from Jim Collins and Jerry Porras's *Built to Last*.
