Raising Believers - From Values to Action

As our children begin another school year, September 11, 2026 Friday khutbah raised a question that is much bigger than Sunday School:

What kind of human beings are we trying to raise?

Every parent wants their child to succeed.

We want our children to receive a good education.

We want them to develop confidence, skills, and meaningful friendships.

We want them to have opportunities, fulfilling careers, and a good life.

But as Muslims, we must ask a deeper question:

What does it mean for our child to have a good life?

Is success simply getting good grades?

Is it getting into a good university?

Is it having a successful career?

Is it earning enough money?

Or is true success becoming a person who knows Allah, understands their purpose, has good character, serves others, and can navigate the dunya without becoming enslaved by it?

I encourage parents, students, teachers, administrators, and all community members who were unable to attend today’s khutbah to spend a few minutes reflecting on these ideas—especially as we prepare to begin our 2026/2027 school year and look forward to a successful and meaningful year together.

The September 11, 2026 khutbah calls us to make five commitments:

* FAITH: Know Allah. Trust Allah. Believe in the potential and goodness in one another.

* GROWTH: Learn. Reflect. Improve. Teach our children how to learn and think.

* COMMUNITY: Belong. Connect. Build relationships. Turn strangers into friends.

* SERVICE: Give. Help. Welcome. Contribute. Be candles that give light to others.

* DISCIPLINE: Commit. Show up. Be punctual. Follow through. Be dependable.

These are not simply values we teach our children. They are values we must model ourselves.

May Allah help us raise a generation that succeeds not only in the dunya, but also in faith, character, service, and purpose—and that uses whatever success Allah grants them to make the world a better place.

An in-person open house session is scheduled for Sunday 13th September 2026. ​Parents desiring to enroll their child(ren) for new Sunday School year need to attend the in-person session.

Volunteer / Teaching Opportunity

Sunday School sub-committee is always looking for new volunteers to help teach or TA regular classes. This gives an opportunity to existing teachers to take a break once in a while. Community members and parents are requested to volunteer as teachers or, as TAs that can help and learn to be teachers for the future. This is a great opportunity to contribute to our children’s education and is a very rewarding experience. Please contact the IMAN school committee if you would like to volunteer as a Teacher or a TA.

Alḥamdulillāh — A Year of Consistency in Congregational Prayer

We are pleased to celebrate a wonderful achievement in our IMAN community: for the past twelve consecutive months, we have had a congregation of five or more worshippers for Maghrib and ʿIshāʾ every single day.

This is more than a number—it is a reflection of faith, commitment, and community. Day after day, members of our community have made the effort to come together, pray together, and keep the doors of our masjid filled with the remembrance of Allah.

We thank Allah ﷻ for this blessing and extend our heartfelt appreciation to everyone who has contributed to this achievement, whether by attending regularly, leading prayers, encouraging others, or simply making the effort to be present.

Sūrat at-Tawbah: Truthfulness, Accountability, and Repentance

Alhamdulillah, our daily Qur'an Study Circle has completed deliberations on Sūrat at-Tawbah, the 9th chapter of the Qur’an. Revealed primarily in the later Madinan period, the sūrah addresses a believing community that has moved beyond survival and is now being tested by responsibility, commitment, and the cost of faith. It is a powerful examination of what happens when belief must be demonstrated through truthfulness, sacrifice, and action.

The central question of the sūrah is:

Are we truly faithful when faith becomes difficult, costly, and demanding?

Sūrat at-Tawbah confronts the gap between professed faith and lived commitment. Through the events surrounding the campaigns against hostile forces, the expedition to Tabūk, the behavior of the hypocrites, and the difficult story of the three believers who remained behind, the Qur’an teaches that faith is not merely a declaration. True faith requires truthfulness (ṣidq), accountability, sacrifice, and willingness to place Allah above personal comfort and worldly interests.

A major theme of the sūrah is the distinction between sincere believers and hypocrisy (nifāq). The hypocrites sought excuses when sacrifice was required, while sincere believers responded even when the journey was difficult and the circumstances demanding.

The sūrah therefore challenges us to examine not only what we say we believe, but how we respond when our faith is tested.

Yet Sūrat at-Tawbah is not simply a sūrah of warning. At its heart is the profound message of repentance (tawbah). The story of the three believers who remained behind from Tabūk demonstrates that honest acknowledgment of failure, rather than excuses or deception, can become the beginning of spiritual renewal. Allah's acceptance of their repentance reminds us that accountability and divine mercy are not opposites: true repentance begins with truthfulness and leads back to Allah.

The sūrah also calls the community to collective responsibility. Believers are urged to support one another, give generously, strive for what is right, and build a community whose values are reflected in its actions. Wealth, family, comfort, and worldly attachments must never become more important than loyalty to Allah and His Messenger.

The closing verses bring the sūrah to a deeply compassionate conclusion. The Prophet ﷺ is described as deeply concerned for the believers, distressed by their suffering, and full of mercy toward them. Yet his complete reliance is upon Allah: “Sufficient for me is Allah; there is no god but He. Upon Him I rely.” The sūrah therefore ends by joining human compassion with complete trust in Allah.

In the broader Qur’anic sequence, Sūrat al-Anfāl teaches how a believing community develops strength, unity, discipline, and responsibility. Sūrat at-Tawbah then asks whether that community will remain truthful when its faith demands sacrifice. It moves the believer from strength to accountability, from outward commitment to inward sincerity, and ultimately from failure and repentance to renewed trust in Allah.

Key Reflection: A believer's true test is not what we profess when faith is easy, but whether we remain truthful, accountable, and devoted to Allah when faith demands sacrifice.

Community members are encouraged to benefit through active daily participation, as well as by engaging with the Qur'an Study Circle being developed and shared each day.
