AHL AL-BAYT
إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ لِيُذْهِبَ عَنكُمُ الرِّجْسَ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَيُطَهِّرَكُمْ تَطْهِيرًا
Indeed, Allah only desires to keep away from you all impurity, O People of the House, and to purify you with a thorough purification.(Quran 33:33)
Who are the Ahl al-Bayt?
Ahl al-Bayt means the People of the Household of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. In Shia Islam, the Ahl al-Bayt refers to the members of the Prophet's household whom Allah and His Messenger have honored and whom the Prophet identified as sources of guidance for the Muslim community after him.
In particular, the Ahl al-Bayt includes Fāṭimah al-Zahrāʾ, the daughter of the Prophet; her husband Imam ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, the Prophet's cousin and successor; their sons Imam al-Ḥasan and Imam al-Ḥusayn; and the nine Imams descended from Imam al-Ḥusayn.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said in the well-attested Ḥadīth al-Thaqalayn:
“Verily, I leave behind among you two precious things: the Book of Allah, the Almighty and the Glorious, and my kindred (ʿItrah). The two will never separate until they return to me at the Pond.”
This tradition emphasizes the enduring connection between the Qur'an and the Ahl al-Bayt as sources of guidance for the Muslim community.
