Friday Khutbah · September 25, 2026

The heart can hold wisdom and its opposites side by side, and Imām ʿAlī (ʿa) calls it "the most wondrous thing" in the human being. In Saying 108 of Nahj al-Balāghah he shows how every drive Allah placed in it (hope, anger, contentment, fear, wealth, appetite) is a gift that turns into a vice when pushed to excess or left lacking. Hope becomes greed or despair, anger becomes rage, and ease breeds heedlessness. "Every shortfall harms it, and every excess corrupts it."

The second khutbah carries this lesson to our world. The crimes against innocent people in Gaza, Sudan and elsewhere begin in unguarded hearts. Greed, rage, fear and the arrogance of power grow into systems that destroy lives. Closer to home, our comfort tempts us toward numbness, despair or anger that achieves nothing. The balanced heart neither looks away nor gives up.

Six commitments to carry with us:

1. A nightly moment of self-accounting

2. A monthly gift to relieve innocent suffering

3. One letter or call this month on behalf of civilians

4. Share only what we have verified

5. One screen-free family conversation each week

6. A daily duʿāʾ for the oppressed, by name

All parents, students, teachers, administrators, community members are encouraged to spend a few minutes reflecting on these ideas—especially as we prepare to begin our 2026/2027 school year and look forward to a successful and meaningful year together.

We are all asked to make five commitments:

• FAITH: Know Allah. Trust Allah. Believe in the potential and goodness in one another.
• GROWTH: Learn. Reflect. Improve. Teach our children how to learn and think.
• COMMUNITY: Belong. Connect. Build relationships. Turn strangers into friends.
• SERVICE: Give. Help. Welcome. Contribute. Be candles that give light to others.
• DISCIPLINE: Commit. Show up. Be punctual. Follow through. Be dependable.

These are not simply values we teach our children. They are values we must model ourselves.

May Allah help us raise a generation that succeeds not only in the dunya, but also in faith, character, service, and purpose—and that uses whatever success Allah grants them to make the world a better place.

As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa raḥmatu-llāhi wa barakātuhū

As our children begin another school year, khutbah of September 11, 2026 raised a question that is much bigger than Sunday School:

What kind of human beings are we trying to raise?

What does it mean for our child to have a good life?

The khutbah calls us to make five commitments:

I encourage parents, students, teachers, administrators, and all community members who were unable to attend today’s khutbah to spend a few minutes reflecting on these ideas—especially as we prepare to begin our 2026/2027 school year and look forward to a successful and meaningful year together.

May Allah help us raise a generation that succeeds not only in the dunya, but also in faith, character, service, and purpose—and that uses whatever success Allah grants them to make the world a better place.

We are pleased to celebrate a wonderful achievement in our IMAN community: for the past twelve consecutive months, we have had a congregation of five or more worshippers for Maghrib/ʿIshāʾ every single day.
